MarketComm President Pens Guest Column for The Charlotte Post

CHARLOTTE, N.C., August 25, 2000 -- A guest column by MarketComm President Stern Dixon appeared in The Charlotte Post August 24.

The column is a regular weekly feature called Executive Summary that is written by area business leaders. This is the second year in a row that Dixon has been asked to write a column for the feature.

This year~s piece offered a few reasons why the fight for prayer in schools is a misguided effort. Dixon, who is both Christian and Republican, said in the piece that even Jesus himself would have found the squabble ridiculous and cites admonitions by Jesus from the Gospels to "pray in secret."

"The fight over school prayer is not about talking to God," Dixon says. "It~s about calling attention to oneself. As a Christian, I prefer that we spread our message the same way Jesus spread his -- through quiet acts of love for neighbor and enemy both.

"Like the old Sunday School song goes, ~They~ll know we are Christians by our love,~ and not by our beseaching God~s help before football games with the rival from the next county over."

The Charlotte Post is the "voice of the black community" in Mecklenburg, Rowan and Cabarrus counties in North Carolina, and in Chester and York counties in South Carolina.
